Founders

Thomas D. Casey

Original Founder

Mr. Casey is a Mediator and attorney based in Washington, D.C. In late 2007, Mr. Casey, along with Craig C. Hess, co-founded the firm now known as MAXEX. Mr. Casey and Mr. Hess led the early stages of the venture including refinement and vetting of key components, creating partnerships with established market players, and two successful rounds of friends-and-family financing. In 2012, Mr. Casey and Mr. Hess recruited Thomas M. Pearce, Jr. to join them as a partner and serve as CEO of MAXEX. In 2013, Mr. Casey resigned from the MAXEX to practice as an attorney and Mediator. Mr. Casey’s background includes service at federal agencies responsible for policy oversight and regulation of government sponsored enterprises in the housing finance sector that include duty as chief of staff to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and as Chief Counsel to the Chairman of the Federal Housing Finance Board, a predecessor of the FHFA.  

Craig C. Hess

Original Founder

Mr. Hess is a co-founder of MAXEX and a director serving on the Audit Committee. He has more than 15 years of experience at Goldman Sachs and other top-tier invesment banks specializing in development, implementation, and execution of complex equity and derivative trading strategies through electronic exchanges. Mr. Hess founded Structured Trading Advisors in 2004 to counsel hedge funds and independent traders in formulating, managing, and executing investment strategies in electronic markets. Mr. Hess is a former President of Pantechnica LLC, a quantitative hedge fund created by TLW Securities, a leading provider of algorithmic and program trading technologies. Mr. Hess is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley.

Daniel S. Baldwin, CFA

Board Member

Mr. Baldwin is an independent director and head of the Compensation Committee at MAXEX. He brings many years of executive management, credit expertise, and asset management experience to the Company. He currently serves as CEO and Managing Partner of Baldwin Capital LLC, a family investment management firm. From 1998 to 2011, Mr. Baldwin was the founder, CEO, and Managing Partner of Stanfield Capital Partners LLC, a specialized credit investment management firm with assets under management at its peak in 2007 in excess of $35 billion. Stanfield was sold to The Carlyle Group in 2011. From 1985 to 1998, Mr. Baldwin was a Managing Director of Citicorp Investment Management and its successor, Chancellor Capital LGT Asset Management and served as head of all high yield products offered through the firm. From 1982 to 1985, Mr. Baldwin served as Chief Investment Officer and Senior Vice President of First Pyramid Life Insurance Company where he was responsible for investment strategies and their implementation. Mr. Baldwin received a BS/BA in Finance from the University of Arkansas.

William M. Decker, CFA

President & COO

Mr. Decker serves as President and COO of MAXEX and brings 31 years of community banking, capital markets, information technology, fixed income, portfolio management, and mortgage banking experience to the Company. Prior to joining MAXEX, Mr. Decker was the founder and CEO of Lydian Data Services, a residential mortgage conduit with over 700 correspondents electronically linked to 8 out of the top 10 Wall Street dealers generating nearly $40 billion per annum in loan volume (1999-2010). Mr. Decker also founded and served as President of Lydian Trust Company, the bank holding company of Lydian. Together with its subsidiaries (Lydian Wealth Management, Lydian Data Services, and Lydian Private Bank), the company did over $130 million in revenue. Prior to Lydian, Mr. Decker served as the President of two community banks: VirtualBank and Enterprise National Bank, where he also served as Chairman and CEO. Prior to that, he spent his career in banking, portfolio management and trading with senior positions at First Atlanta/Wachovia, Southeast Bank, Barnett Bank, and Bank South. Mr. Decker received a BS in Finance from the University of Denver.

Thomas M. Pearce Jr.

CEO & Chairman

Mr. Pearce is a co-founder of MAXEX and he brings 28 years of strategic advisory expertise within the community banking and insurance arenas as well as expertise within the mortgage finance, credit and asset management arenas. Mr. Pearce served on the Board of Directors of Five Oaks Investment Corp (NYSE: OAKS) a mortgage REIT sponsored by XL Group Plc from 2013 to 2015 and was Chairman of the Compensation Committee. From 2002 to 2011, Mr. Pearce was founder and Managing Partner of Vertical Capital, LLC which was sponsored by Bank of America to specialize in the management of non-agency RMBS as well as bank loans. At its peak, Vertical managed more than $14 billion in assets. Prior to founding Vertical Capital, from 1998 to 2002, Mr. Pearce was a founder and CEO of Peachtree Financial, LLC which was a middle-market commercial lending firm and rated servicer sponsored by First Union Bank and A.J. Gallagher. From 1986 to 1998, Mr. Pearce served as a Managing Director and senior member of the Mortgage Department at Bear Stearns where he focused on risk management solutions and portfolio optimization for community banks and insurance companies as well as expertise within the mortgage credit markets. Mr. Pearce received a BA from Washington and Lee University.

Stephen C. Wilhoit

Managing Partner

Mr. Wilhoit has more than 25 years of professional experience in operations, legal, accounting and administration. From 2009 to 2012, Mr. Wilhoit was a Managing Director of Torchlight Investors, a $4 billion institutional manager of commercial real estate debt. In 1999, Mr. Wilhoit co-founded Lydian Trust Company and, from 2004 until its sale in 2009, was President of Lydian Data Services, a business process outsourcing company providing loan fulfillment services to leading Wall Street firms including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank. Prior to that, he was with Ocwen Financial Corporation (NYSE: OCN) from 1990 to 1997, where he was Senior Vice President with responsibility for the Law and Default Servicing groups. Mr. Wilhoit received a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia and a JD from Wake Forest University School of Law.
